UNICA VENEZIA is an art museum project rooted in reusing a shipbuilding warehouse in Venice, Italy. The museum works to reflect a series of unique circumstances that affect the history of Venice down to its’ core. UNICA connects with this Venetian architectural language and it’s industrial past to create a space to pay tribute to art that represents our unique pasts, presents, and futures. This language is understood by connecting with the existing building’s color palette and that of the city of Venice. UNICA connects to the structural core of the warehouses, allowing additions to the building to really connect with given context. These connections allow patrons through a series of gallery halls, exhibition spaces, courtyards and a cafe, with additional space dedicated for offices and studios. The museum tells not just one story within its walls, but several unique stories specific to the person. UNICA embraces uniqueness, both in the art it displays and the building constructed.
