SPRING 2023
The Blooming Hibiscus Children’s Center had a simple goal - to design and inhabit a space that comforts and welcomes children with sensory processing disorders. Children who struggle with these disorders have a harder time behaving in the public sector due to overwhelming elements such as loud noises. The project creates an interactive yet sensory friendly space for these children to develop skills and be creative while learning new skills. The Center has a layout of deep geometric elements interacting and connecting so as to resemble childhood blocks - tools of creativity and development that the BHCC also fosters. These geometries interact in spaces of pastel colors, blending seamlessly with the whimsy and excitement that flows through the space on a daily basis. The building also houses four floors of private apartments (3 per floor) with a private entrance and lobby. The building offers both 2 and 3 bedroom apartments, with the windows containing blackout shutters, allowing those suffering with sensory overload to quickly turn their space into one that can soothe them. The apartments also interact with the outside world, with each having large balconies with rounded surfaces to create an immersive outdoor experience within the home.
